Let me introduce New Editorial Design, co-authored by Im Heon-woo and Han Sang-man.
Im Heon-woo is a designer and educator well known for his book Put an Engine on Your Imagination.
I read it myself a few years back, and it left a strong impression on me.
New Editorial Design, the book I picked up this time, takes the basic principles and concepts of design and reframes them for today's changed media environment.
The conceptual sections are introduced thoroughly alongside plenty of images, so it should be a real help in understanding editorial design.
That said, it doesn't seem quite substantial enough if you want to study typography or layout in real depth.
Even so, what makes this book so appealing is that its design is easy on the eyes and easy to follow, and you can spot careful consideration tucked into every corner, all of it aimed at helping readers grasp the bigger picture of what editorial design means today.
And above all, you can't leave out how much the authors' care for their students comes through in every page.

Near the end of the book there's a line like the one above.
"Design is a way of exploring life."
What a great line.
I'd like to close this brief introduction with my own version of it:
"New Editorial Design is a way of exploring editorial design."
To design is to do far more than simply assemble, arrange, or edit. It means giving something value and meaning, revealing meaning, simplifying, clarifying, adorning, lending authority, making it dramatic, and yes, even giving it pleasure.
